Why do people follow religion?
There are so many beliefs out there. Do people really think their religion is true? When people invest their energy in something they want it to have a good chance of being beneficial. With thousands of religions world wide that gives a religion a one in a thousand chance of being true? Is it worth the effort?

Most people are born into a religion and either stick with it or lapse. Conversions to other faiths/sects do happen but many of these are conversions of convenience (e.g. a nominal Christian converting to another faith to ingratiate themselves into their spouses' family). So if there is an afterlife and only one religion has access to it then you do only have a one in a thousand chance of hitting the jackpot and a 999/1000 chance of eternal damnation. If this is the case then the deity presiding over this state of affairs is evil.
